Anthony Penman – Senior Partner
Anthony Penman is the Senior Partner of the Practice and is only the fourth Senior Partner since Alfred Newton was founded in 1933. He qualified as a solicitor in 1972 and brings a wealth of experience to the firm and to his clients. He prides himself on being able to provide clients with a friendly and approachable service. For the last ten years Anthony has solely specialised in Company, Commercial, Conveyancing, Wills and Probate and Inheritance Tax issues and has advised on a number of high value and complex transactions.
Anthony did not follow the traditional route to becoming a Solicitor but left school at sixteen. After employment in the local steel works and a local newspaper as a Letter Press Printer, he gravitated to his first office job with an insurance company. He qualified for the first year of their exams and then went to work with the Civil Service in the Inland Revenue.
After working for the Inland Revenue he decided to become a Solicitor and this he did by five year articles with a firm of Manchester Solicitors, Geoffrey H Cooper and Co. He then joined a practice in Stockport and became a Partner in that firm before moving to Alfred Newton & Co in 1972.
Mr Penman also qualified as a Professional Dance Teacher, becoming a member of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing in both Ballroom and Latin American branches, helping to pay his way through the five year articles by teaching and had his own dancing school for many years.
Mr Penman was trained in Company, Corporate, Conveyancing and Probate Law and after qualifying carried on such work. He was also a very well respected Advocate in the Criminal Courts, where he represented clients for some thirty years, as well as being involved in Matrimonial and Child Care work.
Mr Penman is married to Sarah with three daughters, Jennifer, Holly and Anna. His interest are classic cars (he owns a 1953 Alvis), good beer, and building dry stone walls.
Sarah Penman B.A. (Law) Hons. – Partner
Sarah Penman is the Head of our Family Department, specialising in child care and family work. She is a member of the Child Care Panel, and has been so since its inception, and regularly represents both parents and children in care proceedings.
Sarah is also a Resolution Accredited Specialist in children and financial issues, with particular experience in dealing with financial matters. Sarah is known for dealing with cases swiftly and efficiently to save clients both time and money. She has over thirty years experience in family law, and provides clients with a calm and reassuring service.
After working in insurance she joined Stockport Magistrates Court as a Clerk and obtained her Law degree on a part time basis whilst employed. After qualifying in 1982 Sarah joined Alfred Newton & Co and became a specialist in Family Law and Child Care Law.
Sarah is married to Anthony with three daughters and in her spare time enjoys gardening, running and walking their two dogs.
Danielle Tysall LL.B. (Hons) – Partner
Danielle is our Managing Partner and Head of Conveyancing, specialising in both conveyancing and private client work. Danielle is responsible for operational management, finance, and our legal service quality standards. Danielle was a lead partner is securing the firm’s membership of the Conveyancing Quality Scheme and is committed to ensuring transactions go through as smoothly and quickly as possible. Her client’s appreciate her calm, assertive and helpful approach. Danielle is also a Trustee for Age UK Trafford, and has particular experience in advising on elderly client issues. She is also the Secretary of the Stockport Law Society. Danielle studied Law at the University of Sheffield, graduating in 2007. After completing the Legal Practice Course at the College of Law, Chester in 2008 Danielle joined Alfred Newton in February 2008 and became a Partner 2013. In her spare time Danielle enjoys reading and has played the cornet for nine years in several local brass bands.
Jennifer Penman LL.B. (Hons) – Partner
Jen is a partner in our family department, specialising in private and public law children cases. Jen’s practice is principally in the area of child care acting for children, parents and other family members within care proceedings. She has also represented parties in private law proceedings relating to children. Jen became member of the Children Panel in 2013 and is regularly instructed to represent the interests of children in court. Jen studied Law at the University of Manchester, graduating in 2007 and after completing the Legal Practice Course at BPP Manchester joined Alfred Newton’s in 2008, becoming a Partner in 2013. Jen is a Trustee of Stockport Without Abuse and is Vice President of the Stockport Law Society. Jen became a member of the Child Concern Committee in 2015. . Jen’s interests are reading and music and she is a keen runner, completing the London Marathon in April 2013.
Kirsty Almond LL.B. (Hons) – Assistant Solicitor
After studying Law at Manchester Metropolitan University and graduating in 2007 Kirsty joined Alfred Newton in January 2008. Kirsty qualified as Solicitor in December 2011 and currently specialises in housing and family law. In her spare time Kirsty enjoys going to concerts and reading.
Emma Davison LL.B. (Hons) – Assistant Solicitor
Emma studied law at the University of Central Lancashire then attended the College of Law in Chester in 2005/2006. Emma qualified as Solicitor in July 2009. Emma joined Alfred Newton in May 2014 and specialises in conveyancing and family law. In her spare time Emma enjoys baking and going to the gym. She also completed the London Marathon 2013 and enjoys learning about wildlife.
Julian Derry LL.B. (Hons) – Assistant Solicitor
Julian came to the law late having served 16 years in the Royal Air Force, leaving in 1996 and then going to University. Julian graduated in 1999 and qualified as a solicitor in 2004. He was a member of the Mental Health Review Tribunal panel from 2004 to 2013 and became an accredited member again in 2014, after spending a period of time specialising in criminal litigation. Julian is a member of the Duty solicitor scheme, previously representing clients at both the magistrates’ court and police station. In his spare time he enjoys going to the gym and swimming, watching his son play rugby league for Telford Raiders and walking the dog.
Melissa Hunt LL.B. (Hons) – Assistant Solicitor
Melissa joined Alfred Newton in 2015 and is based at our Wilmslow office. Melissa studied Law at the Manchester Metropolitan University and qualified as a Solicitor in 2013. Melissa specialises in Conveyancing, Wills and Probate matters including Lasting Powers of Attorney and Deputyship Orders. In her spare time Melissa enjoys spending time with family and friends, going to concerts and going to the gym.
Jennifer Stephenson B.A. (Hons) – Assistant Solicitor
Jennifer studied Politics and Sociology at Kingston University and then went on to complete her legal qualifications at the College of Law. Jennifer qualified as a solicitor in March 2004 and joined Alfred Newton in May 2017 bringing with her 13 years of experience in Family Law. Jennifer is a member of the Family Law Advanced Panel and offers a range of family advice and assistance in respect of complex matters including, care proceedings, divorce, finances, domestic abuse and Children Act issues. In her spare time Jennifer enjoys attending her local gym, skiing and hiking with friends.
Leah McAdams LL.B. (Hons) – Assistant Solicitor
Leah is an Assistant Solicitor with our firm and joined us in July 2015. She studied law at the University of Huddersfield, where she obtained a Master’s of Law and Practice degree in addition to an LLB (Hons). Leah commneced her training contract with the firm and completed 6 month seats in both Conveyancing and Wills & Probate including Lasting Powers of Attorney, Family Law, with particular focus on care proceedings and Mental Health Law. She qualified in July 2017.
Gemma Bradley B.A. (Hons) – Trainee Solicitor
Following graduation from Edge Hill University with a degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice in 2013, Gemma chose to convert to Law via the Graduate Diploma in Law, graduating in 2014 and joining Alfred Newton in October 2014. Having completed the Legal Practice Course in September 2016, Gemma is now completing her training contract and is on course to qualify in July 2018. She specialises in Conveyancing, Wills and Probate and has an interest in Mental Health Law. In her spare time she enjoys water skiing, walking her two Golden Retrievers and socialising with friends.
Holly Penman – Trainee Licensed Conveyancer
Holly Penman is a Trainee Licensed conveyancer who has worked at the firm for a number of years.
She works closely with Danielle Tysall and Anthony Penman in the Conveyancing department working towards her qualification. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family, walking the dogs and reading.
Stanley Newton is the son of Alfred Newton, the founder of the firm. He started coming into the practice in 1941, had a break for Army Service and rejoined the practice in 1947, and although retiring on a full time basis some few years ago Stan is still part of the Alfred Newton family, calling into the office occasionally.
Stan always specialised in Conveyancing and Property matters and became an expert in Land Registry practice.
He is now a widower with three children. He is a stalwart of St Georges Church, Stockport and has a passionate interest in classic buses and steam trains.
